ABSTRACT

Lalia Mantecón, Fitoplancton MarinoAlgae for aquaculture and beauty (Algae4A-B) project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation Programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action - Research Fellowship Programme – Research and Innovation Staff Exchange (RISE). The main objective of this type of action is to stimulate research and innovation by the transfer of knowledge through the exchange of personnel. Therefore, the project aims to bring together experts from Academia and Industry, from cross-sectorial research areas with complementary background. In this way Algae4A-B seeks to combine both basic and applied biotechnology research and technologies with state-of-the-art biomass production technologies, in order to develop novel microalgae based products aimed both towards the aquaculture and cosmetic Industries.

 

To accomplish this a diverse consortium of seven partners from four different countries have been collaborating. The participants from Academia are: Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique – CNRS (France), Agricultural University of Athens – AUA (Greece), Centro de Cièncias do Mar – (CCMar Portugal) and Instituto de Investigación Agraria y Pesquera – IFAPA (Spain). The industry participants are: Apivita (Greece), Life sequencing (Spain) and Fitoplancton Marino (Spain).

 

The four-year project started in January 2016, and now is nearly completed, in this time it has done many dissemination and outreach activities like workshops, summer schools, newsletters and publication of results. In addition, the project has accomplished very interesting outcomes from which we can highlight the development of new bioactive microalgae extracts that can be used in aquaculture or cosmetic industry which will be used in well-defined end products.
