Fish tagging has become an essential tool for population dynamics in fisheries and longitudinal studies in aquaculture. In this presentation the main types of tags used in these two fields were revised highlighting their main applications and advantages/disadvantages. Particular emphasis was done in Visible Implant Elastomer (VIE), Coded wire tags (CWT), Visible Implant Alpha, Tags Passive Integrated Transponder Tags (PIT) as suitable tags for studies in aquaculture. The relevance of using individual or group tagging for statistical analysis and the consequences on the experimental designs were presented and some examples were discussed.
