ProtMar - Marine Recombinant Proteins and Biosensors Platform: Workflow and Capabilities

The bio-potential and value of marine proteins is immense and constitutes an extraordinary resource for the discovery of new bioactive compounds of interest from a biomedical, industrial and basic science perspective. Exploiting Protein Marine Biodiversity and Biotechnology for Blue Growth is the slogan of ProtMar (Marine Recombinant Proteins and Biosensors Platform). ProtMar platform is included in the technological core facilities (CTSemail@example.com) at CCMAR and is part of the EMBRIC (European Marine Biology Research Infrastructure Cluster) consortium, which aims to exploit the biotechnology potential of proteins from marine organisms. This has been accomplished in CCMAR by building and providing to all “stake-holders” easy access to state of the art technologies and know-how.
ProtMar service offers (capabilities and technologies) includes: A) Consulting and training; B) Recombinant protein expression: Gene cloning, Expression constructs and E. coli transfection, Lab scale protein expression, Protein recovery and purification/ quality control, C) Structural elucidation: In silico-bioinformatic, Secondary and tertiary structure analysis, Thermal stability, Agregation/Monodispersion analysis; D) Functional characterization: Immuno analysis, Molecular interactions, Biosensor, In vitro cell assays, Tissue/cell total protein extract preparation. Additional access through the EMBRIC consortium to resources/ technologies: Prokaryote/eukaryote expression systems; Small Angle X-Ray Scattering; Crystallization and Structure determination; Mass Spectrometry.
ProtMar has contributed to several projects including Algae4A-B project - a MARIE SKŁODOWS KA-CURIE RISE project. Testing by APIVITA S.A., (cosmetic company, Greece) the bioactivity of proteins from marine organisms (fish/microalgae/cyanobacteria derived compounds produced by ProtMar) on human skin cell line using the in vitro functional assays. A case study is exploring the bio-potential of the recombinant Cartilage Acidic Protein 1 (CRTAC1) in cosmetically applications. CRTAC 1 is present from cyanobacteria’s to men and their structural characteristics strongly suggest that they may be involved in cell-cell or cell-matrix interactions, which makes it a target of potential interest for applications in tissue regeneration.
